Embarking on the CUR 834 Doctoral Seminar, the journey to understanding the nature of knowledge (ontology) and the theory of knowledge (epistemology) seemed daunting. Indeed, grappling with these concepts has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences in my academic journey.

But one must not shy away from complexity. As I delved deeper, I found myself drawn towards two powerful theoretical frameworks: Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Cognitive Load Theory (CLT). These frameworks are particularly relevant for today's educational landscape, where self-directed online learning environments, powered by artificial intelligence, are becoming increasingly prevalent.

SDT, at its core, revolves around motivation. It posits that people are driven to grow and achieve personal fulfillment when their needs for competence, relatedness, and autonomy are satisfied. In the context of AI-driven online learning, this theory provides a lens to understand how learning platforms can be designed to fulfill these innate needs and thereby foster a more engaged and motivated learning environment.

On the other hand, CLT focuses on the capacity of the human brain to process information and how excessive cognitive load can hinder learning. With the advent of AI in education, understanding cognitive load becomes even more crucial. We can leverage AI to manage cognitive load effectively, ensuring that learners are challenged, but not overwhelmed.

Despite the challenges faced in this course, such as grappling with ontology and epistemology and researching different theoretical frameworks, the knowledge and insights gained have been immeasurable. A significant milestone has been the completion of the first chapter of my dissertation—a task that seemed daunting, but achievable in hindsight. This accomplishment serves as a testament to the power of determination and the potential within us all to accomplish great things.

In upcoming posts, we'll delve deeper into how SDT and CLT can guide the design of AI-powered online learning environments to maximize learner motivation and achievement. So stay tuned!
